Vitamin B9 Nutrient fortifier
Details
Vitamin B9, also known as Folic Acid, is an essential water-soluble B-complex vitamin. Chemical name: Pteroylglutamic Acid; Chemical formula: C₁₉H₁₉N₇O₆. It gets its name "folic acid" because it was first extracted from spinach leaves. As a water-soluble B-complex vitamin, it works synergistically with Vitamin B12 and B6 to participate in homocysteine metabolism, and the three are known as "methyl donor-related B-complex vitamins". It appears as a yellow or orange-yellow crystalline powder, odorless, tasteless, and slightly hygroscopic.

Main Application Fields

(1) Pharmaceutical and Health Field: Core for Prenatal Care and Anemia Treatment

This is the most critical application scenario of Vitamin B9, and its role in preventing fetal neural tube defects has been globally recognized.

Supplementation During Pregnancy and Preconception:

  • Core purpose: Women planning to conceive need to supplement 400μg of synthetic folic acid daily from 3 months before conception to 3 months after pregnancy, which can reduce the incidence of fetal neural tube defects (such as spina bifida and anencephaly) by 50%-70%.
  • Special cases: Women with a history of giving birth to infants with neural tube defects need to increase the dosage to 4mg daily under the guidance of a doctor, which is much higher than the conventional dose.
  • Treatment of Megaloblastic Anemia: Used for megaloblastic anemia caused by folic acid deficiency (common in populations with malnutrition, long-term alcoholism, and gastrointestinal absorption disorders). The oral dosage is 5-15mg daily. Combined use with Vitamin B12 can avoid masking the neurological symptoms of B12 deficiency caused by folic acid supplementation alone.
  • Auxiliary Improvement of Hyperhomocysteinemia: Combined with Vitamin B6 and B12 (400μg folic acid + 10mg B6 + 1000μg B12 daily), it can reduce blood homocysteine levels and assist in preventing cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
(2) Food Industry: Mandatory Fortification to Compensate for Dietary Insufficiency

Due to the easy loss and low absorption rate of natural folic acid, food fortification is an important means to improve public folic acid intake. Key Fortified Foods:

  • Infant formula foods (milk powder, rice cereal): Synthetic folic acid is mandatorily added to support the neurological development and cell division of infants and young children.
  • Grain products (fortified flour, fortified rice, breakfast cereals): Each 100g of flour must be added with 140μg of folic acid to compensate for the folic acid loss in refined grains (the folic acid content of polished rice is 60% lower than that of brown rice), covering populations whose staple food is grains.
  • Foods for special medical purposes (postoperative nutritional powder, elderly nutritional formulas): Supplement folic acid for populations with weak digestion and absorption and high demand for cell repair (such as postoperative patients and the elderly) to promote physical recovery.
  • Fortification Form: Microencapsulation technology is mostly adopted to protect synthetic folic acid from being destroyed during high-temperature processing (such as baking and steaming) and ensure the final product meets the required content standards.
(3) Feed Industry: Promoting Animal Growth and Reproduction

Added to the feed of livestock, poultry, and aquatic animals to prevent "megaloblastic anemia" (such as stunted growth and sparse feathers in chicks), reproductive disorders in sows (such as miscarriage and stillbirth), and low survival rate of fish and shrimp caused by folic acid deficiency.

Common addition form: Compounded with Vitamin B12 and B6 into "B-complex vitamin premixes", which are added to chicken feed, pig feed, and fish/shrimp feed. It is particularly crucial for young animals and breeding animals.
