Aspartame
Aspartame ( Abbreviation: APM), also known as aspartyl phenylalanine methyl ester or artificial sweetener, is a non-carbohydrate artificial sweetener. It appears as a white crystalline powder at room temperature. Due to its high sweetness, pure sweet taste, non-cariogenic property, low calorie content, low hygroscopicity, and no stickiness, aspartame is mainly added to beverages, vitamin lozenges, or chewing gum as a substitute for sugar. Many people with diabetes and those aiming to lose weight use aspartame as a sugar replacement. However, high temperatures cause it to decompose and lose its sweetness, so it is not suitable for cooking or use in hot drinks.
Food And Beverage Industry
Aspartame serves as the core sweetener source for sugar-free/low-sugar products, covering multiple sub-categories:
In sugar-free carbonated drinks (such as cola, Sprite), sugar-free fruit juices, tea drinks, sports drinks, and plant-based protein drinks, it provides a pure sweet taste while containing zero calories, meeting the needs of sugar control and weight loss.
It is mostly used in low-temperature processed sugar-free biscuits, cakes, and for flavoring the surface of finished products. Due to its poor thermal stability (it easily decomposes at temperatures exceeding 120°C), it is generally not suitable for high-temperature baked bread or fried foods.
In sugar-free hard candies, soft candies, and chewing gum, aspartame not only prevents tooth decay (it is not broken down by oral bacteria to produce acid) but also extends the longevity of sweetness. For example, a piece of sugar-free chewing gum usually contains 10-30 milligrams of aspartame; one would need to chew 80-240 pieces daily to potentially exceed the safe intake level, which is practically impossible in real life.
In sugar-free yogurt, lactic acid bacteria drinks, low-fat cheese, and ice cream, it can balance the sour taste and control calorie content, making it suitable for people with diabetes.
In meal replacement shakes, meal replacement bars, low-calorie potato chips, and jelly, aspartame satisfies the demand for sweetness while strictly controlling total calorie intake, making it suitable for weight management scenarios.
Pharmaceutical And Healthcare Product Industry
Thanks to its property of not raising blood sugar and its ability to improve taste, aspartame is often used as a flavoring agent in pharmaceuticals and healthcare products:
Pharmaceuticals
In oral liquids (such as children's cold medicine, cough syrup), chewable tablets (vitamins, calcium tablets), effervescent tablets, and lozenges (throat lozenges), it can mask the bitter taste, making it particularly suitable for children and people with diabetes. For instance, it is used as a substitute for sucrose in medications specifically for people with diabetes to avoid affecting blood sugar levels.
Healthcare Products
In vitamin effervescent tablets, protein powders, meal replacement healthcare products, and probiotic supplements, aspartame ensures the "sugar-free" positioning while enhancing the palatability of the products.
