Inositol
Inositol is usually classified as a 'vitamin-like substance' (formerly known as vitamin B8) with the chemical formula C₆H₁₂O₆. It is also called cyclohexanehexol and is a sugar alcohol containing six carbon atoms. The human body cannot synthesize myo-inositol on its own and must obtain it from food; more precisely, inositol is considered a conditionally essential nutrient, meaning that when endogenous synthesis is insufficient, it needs to be supplemented through the diet. Myo-inositol appears as a white crystalline powder or colorless crystals, is odorless, sweet in taste, and has a mild flavor. It is highly soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in organic solvents such as ether and chloroform.

Main Application Fields
Functional Food Additive: Used as a low-calorie sweetener in sugar-free beverages, chewing gum, and health foods. It provides sweetness without raising blood sugar levels, making it suitable for diabetics and those managing carbohydrate intake .
Nutritional Fortifier: Added to infant formulas and sports nutrition products to support neurological development in infants and meet metabolic demands in athletes.
Natural Dietary Sources: Found in whole grains, legumes , nuts, citrus fruits, and animal livers. A balanced diet typically meets baseline requirements .
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Management: Its most notable application involves regulating insulin signaling pathways to reduce insulin resistance. This improves ovulatory dysfunction and hyperandrogenic symptoms in PCOS patients, enhancing fertility with fewer side effects than conventional hypoglycemic drugs .
Neurological Health Support: As a cofactor in neurotransmitter synthesis, it aids in managing anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It is also used in adjunctive therapy for autism and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Additionally, it protects neurons and slows progression of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's .
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Improvement: Promotes hepatic lipid metabolism, reducing fat accumulation in liver cells and supporting NAFLD treatment .
Skincare Ingredient: Regulates sebum secretion, commonly used in oil-control and acne-treatment products (e.g., toners, serums) to reduce oiliness and improve enlarged pores and acne .
Skin Barrier Restoration: Enhances healthy keratinocyte growth, strengthens the skin barrier, and alleviates redness and flaking in sensitive or dry skin types .
